Origin of Bugger Bognor!

King George V. (Image Source: Britannica)

This is believed to be King George V's last words on his deathbed.

King George V was a heavy smoker and he fell ill with a chest infection in 1928. He spent some time recuperating at Sir Arthur du Cros's house in the south-coast town of Bognor and when he was leaving the town he was petitioned to rename it Bognor Regis as a mark of his visit.

The story goes that on his deathbed he was told “Cheer up, your Majesty, you will soon be at Bognor again.” To which George responded, “Bugger Bognor!”.
