On Carey Street British slang
A euphemism for being in debt or bankrupt
If you don't spend your money frugally, you will end up on Carey Street.
If he does not make effort in business, he will be on Carey Street.
This phrase comes from the street in London where the bankruptcy court in the UK used to be located. In the 1840s, the court moved to Carey Street, but until much later, the phrase did not develop as a synonym for bankruptcy.
