Pull (some/a few) wires phrase
To use someone's power or influence with others so that he or she gets what he or she wants or helps someone else
By pulling some wires, they won the debate, though their team's performance was poor.

A humorous way of saying that what one has said is just what they acknowledge and may not be entirely accurate
Mike: Have you returned from your vacation on the beach? Your skin seems to get tanned.
