The verb "lay" and "pour" can substitute for the verb "spread".
If someone "spreads it on thick", he/she exaggerates his/her feelings, overstates his/her experiences, or flatters somebody in order to impress people and gain benefit from them.
I knew that he spread it on thick for me because he wanted to borrow some money.
There is no need to spread it on too thick, or else no one can get the hang of your project. Keep it simple and clear.
