The one who wins the decisive victory in an argument, contest, or game is the true champion, rather than one who won first but lost in the end.  

 

Though we lost to them this time, we will try harder to secure a place in the final and win. He who laughs last, laughs best.

Despite losing in the first round, I thought to myself that he who laughs last, laughs best to boost my morale.

This proverb originated in England, from around the year 1608, from a play called The Christmas Prince.
