The longest way round is the nearest way home proverb
The word "furthest" can substitute for the word "longest". The word "shortest" can substitute for the word "nearest".
If someone says that "The longest way round is the nearest way home", he/she means that it is better to follow something step by step and carefully rather than try to take a shortcut and everything can be disrupted.
My dad reminded me that "the longest way round is the nearest way home" when I cut corners on planning for vacation.
A: "It will take you quite a lot of time to get promotion. Are you persistent enough?" B: "For me, the longest way round is the nearest way home. I will try my best in work and wait for a promotion opportunity."
The proverb dates back to the mid 17th century.
