Play (something) off as (something else) phrasal verb
If you "play something off as something else", you influence the perception of others by making something appear to be something else.
He usually plays Lisa off as a selfish and angry person but we all know that she is the opposite.
My mom has played the curfew time off as a protection to me.
Our teacher played the new teaching method off as an encouragement for us to study better.
