The verb "shoot" should be conjugated according to its tense.
The term "shoot the shit" first appears in the 1940s, most memorably in a letter by novelist Norman Mailer. With "shit" meaning "stuff," i.e., any old topic, the "shit" might be a more intense and alliterative substitute for "breeze".
