Meaning of Straight-Laced

Synonyms:

prim , puritanical

Straight-Laced British American disapproving adjective

As an adjective "strait" means 'narrow or cramped' and 'strict or rigorous'. Being tightly laced or confined is the idea behind strait-laced and straitjacket. However, since strait is now old-fashioned and unfamiliar, people often interpret it as the more common straight word. Straight-laced and straight-jacket are now generally accepted in standard English, and straight-laced spelling is more common in the Oxford English Corpus than strait-laced.

Used to describe someone who has old-fashioned and unchanging views, particularly people’s moral behaviour

Her strait-laced parents were shocked by that joke.

My friends usually disapprove of me because of my straight-Laced view about love.

Origin of Straight-Laced

This expression has to do with corsets, but not because someone's posture was made straight and upright by the lacing. The phrase was originally "straight laced," meaning constricted or narrow, although "straight laced" is now considered an acceptable spelling. And yes, that other phrase is (redundantly) "the strait and narrow," it was expected that proper individuals would follow the restricted path. "Strait," "strict," and "restrict" are just a few of the Latin stringer words for strain.
